First Blood

First Blood, 1982 film starring  Sylvester Stallone, Brian Dennehy and Richard Crenna.  The film that launched Rambo to the screen.

John Rambo (Stallone) is a former green beret who is still haunted by his time in Vietnam.  As he wandered into the town of Hope he is met by a Sheriff, William Teasel (Dennehy) who not only treats him like dirt he orders him out of town.  The clash became violent and Rambo is arrested.  The unfair treatment angers Rambo even further and he escapes to the woods.  The Sheriff now wants him dead and orders a manhunt which begins Rambo’s rampage back through the town to seek justice.  Rambo’s ex commanding officer Colonel Samuel Trautman (Crenna) tries to step in and save Rambo and the the Sheriff from what will be a bloody battle.

This film was packed with action just about from the get go.  Action star films were on the rise in the late 70s and 80s and this one catapulted that theme to a high level.  Rambo was so successful that it spawned many sequels even up to 2008 with the film ‘Rambo’.  In this first one we see just who the man is and how he took the treatment to veterans personally along with the attitudes of many in those days towards Vietnam veterans.

It’s to bad the people back then didn’t realize that the men and women who were in that war were just doing their duty and were not the cause of it all.  I certainly would not want to piss any of them off.  Only they know what they went through and it was easy to see how fragile their mindset was, you push them to the edge and you take your own chances.

For the time period, this film was well done.  No fancy effects just sets that were to be blown up in style.  Dennehy can play a really good bad guy, he just had that look about him.  Stallone didn’t speak a whole lot in this film, which is kind of good but he sure knew how to be the tough guy!  He and such action stars like Chuck Norris and Schwarzenegger paved the way for these types of popular films.

Now I am going to have to go back and watch the rest of the Rambo series, they were all good.
