Jack Ryan : Shadow Recruit, 2014 film starring Chris Pine, Kevin Costner and Keira Knightley. Decent version of Tom Clancy’s CIA hero.
Jack (Pine) decides to enlist after 9 11 happens. He is severely injured when the helicopter he was in was shot down while flying in Afghanistan. He comes to the attention of CIA agent Harper (Costner) while he is undergoing intense rehabilitation. Harper wants Ryan to finish his schooling and be placed in a job where he can covertly monitor terrorist organizations through their financial records. 10 years later he finds one and goes to Russia to investigate. It soon becomes obvious to Ryan that the company in Russia he is investigating is about to launch some very deadly attacks.
The character, Jack Ryan has been around for years and used in several great films. Hunt for Red October, Patriot Games, Clear and Present Danger and The Sum Of All Fears. The character itself has been played by some greats such as Ben Affleck, Alec Baldwin and Harrison Ford. This film gives you a modern, computer literate Ryan though it does have some aspects of every other Jack Ryan. (Such as his service to his country and injuries sustained doing so.)
Pine is a decent actor and plays his character very well. The story was good and extremely plausible, a well written film. The real action in this film came when they had to go back to New York and find the bomber, before that was ok but we were still learning about the plot. Over all I will give this film a thumbs up and I do believe that I would watch it more than once.
