Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World

Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World, 2003 film starring Russell CrowePaul BettanyBilly Boyd and more.  Set sail for an authentic journey with the British Navy in 1805.

Basically about life at sea during the Napoleonic Wars in 1805.  The ship (HMS Surprise) is run by Captain Jack Aubrey (Crowe) and he and his crew are in pursuit of the Acheron off the coast of South America.  Of course in those days pursuits do not start and end quickly, they take weeks or months to accomplish.  During this time we find more about the man and his crew, the obstacles faced back then and more…

I know I am only giving this film a three but it was ‘Watch Again’ worthy.  They got the time period visuals very accurate I think, though none of us were there to compare it.  The acting was very good, not just from Crowe but the whole gang.  I never saw this in the theaters, just the dvd but I have heard it is spectacular on the big screen.  The story was very good and the whole film very entertaining, even the critics seemed to like it.  I’m not a huge fan of 1800’s type ship films, this was good and I may even watch it again but not among my top favorites.  If you haven’t seen the film you should, you are not wasting two hours.
