City Slickers, 1991 film starring Billy Crystal, Jack Palance, Daniel Stern and Bruno Kirby. Crystal and Palance in a funny western type comedy.
Mitch (Crystal) is about to turn forty. It hits him that he may have not used his life to it’s potential, wasting it and not accomplishing anything. With his mid-life crisis in full swing his two buddies convince him to go with them on a two week holiday in the wild west driving cattle from New Mexico to Colorado. There he meets rough and tough cowboy Curly (Palance) who tries to make him and his friends real cowboy’s and maybe teach him a thing or two about life.
I loved Billy Crystal movies in the eighties and nineties. He is a very funny man and can improvise his comedy on the spot. This film not only garnered great success but spawned a good sequel as well. Apart from the lead cast there were also some great names in it like Patricia Wettig, Tracey Walter and Noble Willingham.
The story was good and subtly promoted these types of vacations which are still popular today. It was definitely funny to see city boys try to be cowboys. The scenery and locations (Colorado and New Mexico) were absolutely fantastic.
In a very comedic way the film showed the journey three men in the midst of a mid-fie crisis met it head on and learned something about life. A very good film that I recommend to all.
