Phillips (Hanks) is taking his ship, the Maersk Alabama from Oman to Mombasa, Kenya. This means having to travel through the pirate infested waters off the coast of Somalia. Sure enough, while underway, their ship becomes the target of a small crew of pirates and eventually they board and take the vessel. After some fighting, in a standoff, the captain gives the pirates a way out, a lifeboat and some money. Phillips is kidnapped by the pirates and the lifeboat is ejected. Now the military is involved a must find a way to save the captain and end the situation before it’s to late.
To me, this was a powerful film full of emotion and suspense. Hanks is a fantastic actor and gave his all in this, especially twoards the end, I mean I felt his emotion through the screen and not every actor can do that. The story was true, based on the 2009 hijacking and the writers and actors made it a story worth seeing. Abdi played the role of the lead pirate amazingly as well, another great actor in his own right. The footage was shot with the shaky cam effect which also made you feel as though you were at sea. The film makers and director Paul Geengrass did the true tale justice and the end result here was an entertaining, gripping and emotional film. It also provided awareness to a huge problem in that part of the world at that time that many of us may not have been aware of. I can not say anything bad about this film, it gets top marks from me.
