Ready Player One

Ready Player One, 2018 film starring Tye SheridanOlivia Cooke and Ben Mendelsohn .  A gamers paradise in this virtual world.

After the death of the creator of the virtual world Oasis Wade (Sheridan), aka Parzival joins the thousands who enter the ongoing contest to win the creator’s fortune and own the Oasis.  Though it can only be played in the Oasis it spills out into the real world as Nolan Sorrento (Mendelsohn) wants to win it at any cost so he can rule the virtual world.

Obviously more to it than that but because it is relatively new I don’t want to spoil it.  The story here was good, not 100% unique as we have seen similar stories being played out in the ‘virtual’ world.  The visuals were spectacular (had to be as 90% of the movie was in the Oasis), though I could tell where cgi started and reality stopped.  Maybe they meant it that way.  I loved the way Spielberg used items from many  older movies including Marty McFly’s DeLorean.  The cast was young but very good in this film, I found most of the real life characters believable.  Gamers will love this film as it delves into the virtual reality and gives you a game scenario that you find yourself trying to solve as well as them.

Though I went into this film thinking it would not be very good (pre conceived notions of gaming within virtual reality) I was pleasantly surprised.  It was very entertaining and I do believe that I may watch it again one day!
