Hostiles

Hostiles, 2017 film starring Christian Bale, Rosamund Pike and Wes Studi.  Very good western film I hadn’t heard about.

The year is 1892 in the New Mexico area of the United States.  Captain Joseph Blocker (Bale), who has spent twenty plus years in the Army fighting the Cheyenne, the Apache, and the Comanche natives is ordered to take one of his despised Indian captures, Cheyenne Chief Yellow Hawk (Studi)  back to his home and set him free.  Though the hatred for the Indians in his charge is great he obeys the orders given him and sets out.  The trip is packed with danger as they rescue a widowed settler Rosalie Quaid (Pike) and are hunted by marauding Comanches who are still on the warpath and are thirsty for blood.

This was a very good, under rated film.  It was a story of hardships endured by the settlers of the west.  It was a story of friendship and coming together.  It was a story of acceptance and forgiveness.  All powerful stories in their own right but bundled together in this film made for a thrilling and intriguing look into the lives of just a few.  It showed the hatred in man that can be transformed to friendship and respect between races during the early years of the American West.

There were several touching scenes including when Master Sgt. Thomas Metz (played by Rory Cochrane) was about to leave and he gave the Chief his last bit of tobacco and asked him to forgive us (the white man).  The best scene I think was when the Captain shook the Chief’s hand and said a part of him dies with the Chief.  What a transformation from a man that wanted to gut the Chief like an animal at the start.

This film was excellent.  Bale’s performance was outstanding.  I believed his character and was amazed at how he made the character transform throughout.  The scenery used in the film looked like Arizona and New Mexico (Loads of open country still to film great westerns) and a bit of Colorado.  All beautiful country.

This is a must watch for all you westerns lovers, it was very period accurate and very enjoyable to watch.  Yes, it may even make the watch again shelf.
