The year is 1977 and two private eye’s, one a single dad (Gosling) and the other who’s best friend is a set of brass knuckles, end up having to work together to solve the case of a missing young woman. What started out as a murder mystery for one and a protect women from pedophiles gig for the other turns into a full blown conspiracy with murder and car crashes. They must each overcome their slight downfalls and come together to figure it all out.
Gotta say here that Gosling surprised me. This was a well acted film for him and I enjoyed it immensely. There was the drama and comedy mixed together and he pulled it off well. His character was the single dad who smoked and drank heavily even in front of his kid, though that was the era then nobody would take notice. Crowe played a good roll as well, he can be very convincing as the comedian and tough guy but he always has been able to. The film balanced drama with humor perfectly and the result was a very good film to watch. The costumes and props seemed to me to be very period accurate along with that awesome seventies music that was always playing.
Warning to those with kids though, there is nudity involved in this film. That being said I really enjoyed this movie. The leads Crowe and Gosling seemed to gel together perfectly and that makes for great entertainment. This film came and went out of theaters quickly so I may have missed it then but it did seem to get good ratings and justly so, great watch.
