The Hunger Games

The Hunger Games, 2012 film starring  Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth and Donald Sutherland.  First in the series about the future and revolution.

The hunger games is a televised game once a year where two people from each of the twelve Districts of Panem are chosen at random to fight to the death leaving only one victor.  Katniss Everdeen (Lawrence) jumps in and volunteers in her district to take the place of her younger sister that was chosen.  Peeta (Hutcherson) is the second player from her district chosen and the two head off to Panem where they are trained and showcased to the city.  Then the game begins and everyone must fend for themselves but Katniss refuses to conform giving and ending to the game no one see’s coming.

This film can be compared to Battle Royale or even Running Man loosely.  The story, obviously not fully unique was still good to watch play out.  The effects were very good and believable.  Now, first off, I have not read the books so I don’t know what was omitted or expanded on so I take it as a fresh movie.

The acting was ok.  Sutherland and Hemsworth were great, Hutcherson and Lawrence were good but just barely believable.  Other great names in this film kept in in higher marks for me, Woody Harrelson and Elizabeth Banks were fantastic.  I loved both of their characters.  We even saw Lenny Kravitz play a pretty good part.

There are a lot of mixed feelings about this film but from an entertainment standpoint I thought it was good.  Not great but good.
